Peter joined Chatswood Tennis Club as an A1 grade player after moving to Sydney in 1972.  

Peter began his teaching career in the mid 1970's with John Newcombe on his tennis ranch in Texas. 1975 saw Peter following a tennis scholarship to the University of Santa Clara, California, where he spent three years studying, playing and coaching.

In 1978 and 1979 Peter was appointed Tennis Director of the Manitou-Wabing Tennis Resort and Camp in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. Manitou-Wabing at that time was the largest tennis resort in the world. During this period, Peter became winner of eight National point score tournaments in Ontario, Canada and competed in numerous tournaments in Europe, USA, Mexico and NZ.

Peter returned to Australia in 1980 and commenced a coaching business and continued his association with Chatswood Tennis Club including a period as Captain of the NSTA Blackwell Cup team. Over the next ten years, Peter, though largely based at Chatswood, coached throughout the North Shore including at court complexes in Turramurra and Castle Cove. From 1990 until late 1996 he successfully built up and managed all aspects of the Chatswood club as the Chatswood Academy of Tennis.

For many years Peter was on the Chatswood Tennis Club management committee including a role as club captain.

As the face of tennis has changed greatly over the last 10 years, the ability to cater for the large range of clients whose limited time requires facilities which can offer night tennis has become a priority for the tennis professional. This facility was not available at the Chatswood Tennis Club.

In 1997 Peter and Justine Betteridge, as Artarmon Academy of Tennis, took up a position as managers and coaches of the Artarmon District Tennis Club in Artarmon, Sydney. Since that time, Peter's highly successful coaching program, particularly focussed on junior development, has continued and thrived.

Though enjoying work with players of all ages and standards, Peter has a particular interest in promising young players and has coached many of Australia's leading players including Kristine Radford, Australia's No 1 ranked female in 1994, Michelle Jaggard who represented Australia in the Federation Cup and Esther Knox, Australian Junior Champion in 1993 and 1994 and currently playing on the international circuit. Other notable pupils include Siobhan Munro, Jonathan Barrett and Brett Cooper.

Peter also enjoys coaching some of Australia's top veteran's players, who train and play regularly at AAT. 

"The AAT crew had a good year in 2007.  Wayne Pascoe won the world doubles crown in Turkey in the over 50 age group. His highest world ranking in 2007 was No. 5.  Hugh Thomson had a great year in the over 60 age group.  He won the world singles title and was ranked No. 1 in the world for the entire year.  Ian Pollard has begun his climb up the world rankings again and Craig Withell opened his world class account and now has a world ranking in the 300s.

Glen Knox  was our heavy weight  team member for 2007.  He has firmly established himself as Sydney's best player in 2007 and although he is far too severe for us oldies, he is gracious enough to still train with the team!

2007 will be a hard act to follow, but already in 2008 Sue Woodward has won the Australian Championship in both singles and doubles in the over 40 division.  Her world ranking has skyrocketed to No. 36 and she only has one tournament on the computer.  She is only going to move up."

Peter is currently coaching Abbie Myers, the highly talented young Australian 14s champion with huge international championship potential.

Using the innovative and motivational coaching techniques he trained in during his time overseas, and adding his own style developed over years of exposure to different situations and experiences, Peter has successfully coached individuals and groups from beginner through to national and international champions. 

Professional coach Mark Nissen is AAT's Head Coach and Manager. 

A highly experienced and talented career coach, Mark is a level 2 coach with the TA and has now joined the Tennis Australia team as a Club Professional.

He is also a fully qualified racquet stringing technician using sophisticated electronic machinery and a great variety of strings to ensure your racquet functions to optimal efficiency.   Mark has been part of the Australian Open stringing team, has strung racquets for over 10 years and has a passion for making your racquet play the best for you.

Mark has also done footwork training with David Bailey.

Phryne Tonge (nee Marlow) played all her junior tennis in England. She was coached by Shirley Brasher, Tony Lloyd and Tony Mottram.

She was County Champion in both singles, doubles and mixed from u/12 to u/18, was part of the National Squad and played at National Level from U/12 to U/18, her best result being runner up the the u/14 doubles. She did not follow the tournament path but achieved both her Level 1 & 2 LTA (UK) coaching qualifications.

Phryne decided to follow her passion for Law at University during which she earned her full colours by taking the University team further than they had every got in the inter-university championships. Having worked for 10 years in various office roles, she decided to return to her passion - teaching tennis and and has worked as a highly motivated and enthusiastic coach for the past 11 years.  Phryne has since earned her Level 1 and 2 Australian Coaching qualifications.

Ross was the 1996 Australian Champion 60's and over. His playing achievements span his lifetime and have given him a maturity and wealth of experience difficult to equal.

Ross played junior Davis cup tennis for Australia and for many years was responsible for king cup tennis for Sweden. He has been the Australian national champion 55 and 60's in both doubles and singles and the winner of world team championships.

John returned to playing tennis after many years, having spent a successful career in "Big Business". One of his roles as Divisional National Training Manager has provided an excellent background context for tennis coaching.

He expanded his coaching skills while on temporary residence in the USA as a member of United States Professional Tennis Registry, and applied some of those skills in assisting the head coach at NYU.

He currently plays competitively in Tennis Vets in Australia and overseas, and has been an integral part of Artarmon Academy of Tennis for many years.
